I have started to play "Be A Player Mode" in NBA 2K11 and I have noticed that their are archetypes in sports games as well. In the beginning, I thought that it was weird that sports games can have arcetypes, but then eventually figured out that they have to go on a journey. It is heroes journey to achieve what everybody wants to achieve in the NBA, winning championships.
In "Be A Plaer Mode" you first start off by creating your own guy. I created a guy and called him Kobe Bryant Jr. You are then put in the NBAdraft and picked by a team. You then start off the bench and your minutes increase as you progress. As you improve, your team also improves and you get a higher chance of wininng a championship. After a few seasons pass you hit your prime and that is when your journey really begins.
My character Kobe Bryant Jr. got drafted to the Los Angeles Lakers and was playing alongside my favorite player Kobe Bryant. There journey began when they new that they were in the playoffs and they new they had a chance to win a championship. "Be A Player Mode" I think is a heroes journey to win the championship with his team and being known as one of the best players in the world. Kobe Bryant Jr. eventually went on to win the championship with the Los Angeles Lakers and went from being rated 56 to 99. 99 is the highest you can go and only the best of the best can get that rating.
Being drafted to the NBA is a big thing because not everybody can be drafted to the NBA. Kobe Bryant Jr. eventually went on to win 8 championships and was the MVP all 8 times. Did you think that their could be archetypes in sports video games and if you did, what archetypes did you think that there are?
Hey Shawn,.
ReplyDeleteGreat post! Nice name for your player! I did a post like this about NHL 11, and found that there were many archetypes in sport games, specifically the hero's journey.
Just wondering, do you think there's some similarities between archetypes like in NBA 2k11 and a sports movie, like Miracle on Ice?
ReplyDeleteNice post Shawn! I love that game too. But do you think that the hero has a enemy in this game? Who do you think it is and how does he prevent you character from succes
ReplyDeleteTo Donald: Hey Donald, I have not seen Miracle On Ice, but I have seen Space Jam and I do think that there are some similarities. Just as Micheal Jordan had to build his team from scratch, I had to create my player from scratch and then work my way up.
ReplyDeleteHey Ronnique, I think that there is not a hero in the game. Everybody who is in the NBA will have there moment one day and will then have there hero moment. But the major debate that is happening in the NBA today is who is better? Kobe Bryant or Lebron James? I think Kobe Bryant!!!
ReplyDeleteHaha Shawn that's cool! I just realized about Be a Player on NBA 2K11 and space Jam had so many similarities. do you think your player can reach the heights of a guy like Michael Jordan and his team in the movie.
ReplyDeleteThe fact that I brought up Miracle on Ice is because it relates to the hero(s) coming from nowhere, defying the odds and becoming greats.
Hey Shawn, I Think Kobe is better then Lebron James too. I understand now that there is no enemy in the game but there a lot of inspiration and mentors for you character Kobe Bryant JR.
